What is the Erbium?
The Erbium Laser provides a safer, more accurate and less painful method of restoring softer, smoother, more youthful appearing skin.  The Erbium/YAG lasers emit extremely short pulses of infrared energy to remove very precise thin layers of skin or tissue with each pass (pulse). In effect, this laser behaves similar to a dermabrasion device with significantly more control in the removal of skin layers.

How does the Erbium work?
The high-powered Erbium/YAG laser produces energy in a wavelength that gently penetrates the skin, is readily absorbed by water (a major component of tissue cells), and scatters the heat effects of the laser light. These unique properties allow removal of thin layers of skin tissue with exquisite precision while minimizing damage to surrounding skin.

The Erbium/YAG laser is commonly used for skin resurfacing in patients who have superficial to moderate facial wrinkles, mild surface scars or splotchy skin discolorations. Skin rejuvenation with the Erbium/YAG laser offers the advantages of reduced redness, decreased side effects and rapid healing compared to some other laser systems.

The Procedure
The beam of laser is passed over the top layer of skin, emitting short intense pulses of light. This results in the exposure of undamaged skin underneath. The Erbium/YAG laser offers a more precisely controlled depth of penetration of the skin. This allows the successful treatment of younger patients needing a light resurfacing as well as those with deeper wrinkles or scarring. The specific lines and areas of the skin are treated. The procedure is no more than forty-five minutes each visit. No local or general anesthetic is needed.

Following the Procedure.
After treatment there is some initial redness to the skin that quickly subsides. The patient may experience redness similar to sunburn over the next few days.  It is important to keep the treated area moisturized and use sun block when outdoors. The treatment lasts approximately 45 minutes and patients are advised to have 3-4 treatments at monthly intervals for optimal results. As this treatment improves skin texture and color, it also stimulates the regeneration of collagen cells. The Erbium/YAG laser treatment does not usually impose restrictions on  lifestyle after treatment, however, consideration should be give to social engagements and best planned a few weeks later than treatment.

Risks & Complications
Problems seldom occur, but caution must be taken with sun exposure after treatment. As with any laser treatment, sunblock is a must. Hypo-pigmentation (lightening of the skin) and hyper-pigmentation (darkening of the skin) are possible. Minor problems may be redness, swelling and scabbing. These are all temporary.
